Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
When two teenage boys, Tom Lewis and Jack Barton, climb the gigantic oak at the bottom of Tom's garden they embark on a journey that takes them toward adulthood, a change embracing both enlightenment and loss. Finding themselves in a dangerous, alien realm, where dreams and reality seem to interweave and deception is at the heart of everything, they come under the malevolent influence of a creature known as the White Wolf. What had began as a childish adventure is in fact something far darker and deeper, for the Wolf is playing a momentous game, an arcane puzzle that must be resolved. The boys walk a dark road of treachery and pain, love and lust, sacrifice and redemption. Friendship and loyalty are put to the test and corruption comes in many guises. Finally, truth can only be revealed through pain and forfeit. It is a journey into the heart of darkness where nothing and no-one are what they seem and the rules are the logic of a dream.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - The Highest Praise for The Magic Lands
Written by fellow Shelfarian Mark H, this book is the story of two fourteen year old boys who find themselves transported into a realm of magic and nightmare.Reminiscent of the Chronicles of Narnia, the story quickly turns into a dark tale of nightmare, lust, and cruelty as the two boys find themselves locked in a contest against the ultimate evil, with the stakes being not only their lives, but their souls as well.Joining Tom Lewis and Jack Barton as they journey through the contantly changing dreamscape of The Magic Lands is like sitting down with Alice In Wonderland and Rob Zombie to drop some acid.Loaded with iconic imagery, The Magic Lands is a tour de force into a surreal realm dominated by evil and insidious temptation.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Marvelous book!
The story begins with two friends, Tom and Jack, who are home on holiday from school. When they climb an ancient oak in Tom's garden, they find a map and a doorway into a strange new world. The two friends then embark on a quest to find a box and restore order to a land suffering under the despotic rule of the cruel White Wolf. What begins as simple and straightforward quickly becomes dark and dangerous as the boys find themselves entangled in a desperate struggle between good and evil. This is a place where nothing is as it seems. Fighting enemies both within and without, forced to place their trust in unlikely allies, Tom and Jack must find the truth and confront their deepest fears.

Mark Hockley has written a marvelous debut novel, one I really enjoyed. The Magic Lands explores the meaning of friendship, touching on themes of loyalty and trust, loss and betrayal. It explores the nature of responsibility, of doing the right thing and helping others even if it is not easy. And it examines the necessity of sacrifice- because everything worthwhile has a price.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Fantasy/horror
What a magnificent read this was. I was drawn into the story with the opening pages. Don't be lulled into thinking that this is a YA book though as there are some very graphic scenes that verge on horror writing. To me it seemed like Hockley has written a modern version of Narnia, but one that is far darker, full of fantastic twists and completely his own. I had to read some of the last quarter of the book over again as I couldn't believe what had just happened, that's how unexpected the turns of events are. Hockley's writing style is captivating and he manages to make dreams, illusions and reality all blur seamlessly together. The overlying message in this tale is of good over evil, that nothing in life comes without a price but hope is always with us. It's difficult to categorize this novel but if I had to I would class it as fantasy/horror. I loved the mystical and pagan elements too.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Bad News, Good News
I hate to be the very first person here who says they didn't like the book, but overall I would rate this book very poor. The action was slow, the plot sometimes confusing, Dredger's name was the only unique kind of name there for a land in magic--the rest were original, and the very climax to the book was coming but fell short.

Now the positive review-the author used similarities between the wolf and the devil. Now I don't know if the author believes in God or not, but from what I read, it seems that he gets it that the devil is the bad guy and one must always take that journey towards the Heavens instead.

So that's the bad/good news from here.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Awsome read!
I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone. It is very imaginative and thought provoking, I would love to see more from this author.
