Editor's Notes and Comments:
Product Description:
'For A Lean Enterprise' is the long-awaited sequel to the industry-standard, 'Bills of Material: Structured for Excellence.'
The content of this book has been modularized for easy reading and reference. The very first section focuses on the issues an Executive Leader needs to know about bills of material. The subsequent section gets into the details, focusing on 'how to.' The last section addresses implementation.

I loved the executive chapters and the way the subsequent chapters get into more examples and details.
The book misses a little bit of depth on some of the topics, it very often all get back too much to practicle experience (lack of theory in a way).
More importantly, it lacks the way the lean bills of material approach can work together with other existing product data management techniques.
Overall very fun to read and very instructive introductory, I will need further in depth support to get to the bones of the topic.
I give a five despite the lack of depth that I will find in other supportive materials, and since the book is very homogeneous, easy to read, fun and convincingly organized.

Much of this book discusses conversion from paper BOMs to early MRP systems in a 30 year old war story format. There is very little on lean and modern ERP systems. He primarily advocates very flat BOMs. I was particularly disappointed by the absence of any discussions on structuring BOMs for the current heavily outsourced business tactics. I suspect this is a very old book with a recent edit and updated copyright date.

The writer based on his classes goes into certain details in showing the importance of the well structured BOM. Case studies goes into a certain level of details to illustrates the points. However, it still remains superficial, if one has to create a new part numbering system and BOM for modern ERP systems such as SAP, the book content may appears a bit shallow.

As a recently graduated Engineer, thrown into the deep end of a manufacturing company, this book provided me with some excellent direction and ideas when it came to looking at the company's Bills Of Material.
The book is well structured and provides useful principles, step by step guides and discusion points to raise when dealing with BOMs.
The author writes from a background of experience in implimenting change in companies, as such, the book takes account of the human element of change and the requirement to manage it.
This book presents a useful start point for manufacturing organisations looking to implement lean concepts beyond the shop floor and deals with one of the fundamental building blocks; the BOM. It provided me with useful direction and challenging questions to ask of other, more senior, engineers!

Dave Garwood has been a significant contributor to improving manufacturing productivity for more than 25 years. His original Bills of Material book was an excellent resource gained from his industry experience and the material presented in his world reknown classes. This book provides an excellent update of that work and brings into focus the importance of properly structuring the Bill of Material in today's Lean Manufacturing environment. I highly recomnend this book.
