I'm a collector of Holmes pastiches and this is one of the worst. A poor blend of Victoriana and science fiction (which had such promise as an idea) the book quickly turns into mush. Language is a poor imitation of what the author perceives to be Victorian British, style is awful. Plus the typography is poor, this does not appear to have been proof-read competently (or at all). There are better books out there.
Good premise, terrible execution.

This pastiche cannot be taken too seriously. In fact, it reminds me of Christopher Moore in style. It is funny, irreverent, and definitely requires one to suspend a great deal of disbelief. However, if you are familiar with the Holmes' stories, you may appreciate the humor. I know I did. It was a quick, amusing read. Yes, the typographical errors were distracting -- and there were plenty of them. No doubt this was published on the cheap. But don't let that put you off if you enjoy an amusing tale with likeable, although not always believable, characters, and a few entertaining twists.

There is little to recommend this pastiche. While the premise of the story isn't bad, the execution is. An apparent effort to emulate the language and style of a Victorian novel, the writing is inconsistent, stilted, and irritatingly cute. The typography is horrid, looking as if it were composed in Microsoft Word but with smart quotes turned off (yes, the quotation marks are straight, not curly), and the text is riddled with misspellings and typographical errors.

This is not a Holmes pastiche; it is poor science fiction masquerading as a story, with a famous detective thrown in to help sales to the unwary.

"Sherlock Holmes & the Heir of Albion" is the hardest book on the great detective I have tried to review in a long time. As a short science fiction adventure it is worth five stars. As a pure Sherlockian tale it perhapes is a four. Either way I recommend it highly. Though I missed Watson as the narrator (this is explained) you have the true feel of Baker Street. You also have the return of Moriarty who teams with our hero, aliens, Sherlock's daughter(!), an element of pure fantasy and a major government conspiracy and cover up. Not a long book, I was able to cover it during one of those awful long waits in an ER and I am a fast reader. Awwwww, I guess for that I better go back up and give this five stars. Sherlockian purists will hate me for that.
