Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Not the best of Enid Blyton, but good enough
These two adventures are the tail end of a very good series that fizzled somewhat after the 4th or 5th book. The characters very first created in the Island of adventure are amongst Blyton's best, and the series is targeted at the more advanced pre-teen reader, not younger children. These two story lines are ok, but regular readers of Blyton will recognize some recycled chunks of plot from some other books of hers. (Frankly, I don't know which books came first, but these seem later)

As far as the "racism" allegations go, remember the era that these books were written in. They are a perfectly natural expression of those times and in fact were considered progressive then. There is nothing overt or in-your-face, but adults looking back at it through the filter of history can see the class differences and imperialist attitudes that were the norm then. Perhaps these books are old enough now to need a "once upon a time..." introduction that will put the old fashioned lifestyle into perspective! :)

There is also the championing of the stoic British code. Boys are meant to be "strong" and not act like "sissies", hence the heckling of the Gussy character. While he is a foreigner in this book, other Blyton books have British kids filling in essentially the same role.

Overall, I would recommend this book to Blyton fans who have read and enjoyed her other books. If you are new to Enid Blyton, or to this series with Philip, Jack, Diana & Lucy-Ann, I suggest reading one of the very first four books (Island of Adventure, Castle of Adventure, Valley of Adventure, and Sea of Adventure - These four are definitely my favorite Enid Blyton books).

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Explicit Racism!
Some people have alleged that Enid Blyton was racist and that some portions from her books deleted in future editions. Well, ff you want to see Enid in her element - this book is enough to go and desecrate her tomb.
Marked with explicit racism the four protagonists from Enid's Famous Adventure Series embark on a journey of verbal abuse and superiority complex heaped on a small foreign boy. He is beaten about, shoved and considered lower than a bird exactly reminiscent of Nazis feeding and loving their Alsatian dogs while starving and killing Jews. Mrs Cunningham is shown to belittle the foreign boy Gussy when her daughter had had his head banged on the ground. When her husband comes she never complains about her daughter's behavior but puts the onus on Gussy. The bird Kiki joins the fun by giving in to the cacophony of evil British Children abusing another child because of his foreign origins. When only the child gets into to the correct British mould the children get friendly with him with no apology of their past behavior. Even a rotten orphan like Jack is shown competing with others in abusing the child not to speak of Lucy -Ann who is a paragon of virtue in all other books making snide remarks about Gussy. Seems Enid must have been on one of her anti-foreigner mood. Had she been alive I would have loved to slap her face hard!
