Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - A Total Disappointment for Jim French and old COLT fans
Don't let the other reviews (most probably written by the porn studio's staff) fool you. This book is a real disappointment.

Combining discarded Jim French photos with publicity photos of the porn video studio's latest 'stars', the book makes an endeavor to show that the spirit of Jim French's work lives on now that the COLT library has been purchased by a porn studio. In fact it clearly illustrates just the opposite. Looking through the pages of this book it is totally clear that Jim French's COLT is dead and the new company has no ability to carry on the unique artistic vision that once guided and defined COLT.

I'm a huge fan of Jim French. His iconic images of masculinity indeed set the standard for male erotic photography. Although his photos were clearly sexual, the photos were also real works of art.

For Jim French fans, the photos will most likely be a mild disappointment. Understandably the new owners would like to make a profit from the purchase of his photo library. I always admire Jim French's work, but I did get the sense that many of his images selected for this book were probably originally discarded as seconds. However, I do admit that as a Jim French fan even his cast-offs are nice to see.

Standing in stark contrast to the photos by Jim French are the almost embarrassing image produced by the studio since Jim French's departure. The models are all good looking men although most now have a decidedly sharper "porn star" look to them. Without the benefit of Jim French's artistic eye, the new Colt Studio manages to make even these beautiful men boring.

Starting with the photo on the front cover you immediately notice how badly the new studio's photos have been retouched. Carlo Massi's face has been smoothed out so drastically it looks silly -- like he's wearing a Kabuki mask. The background of the image has also clearly been replaced. As you flip through the pages you can clearly see the enormous difference between Jim French's artistry and the badly lit, mostly uninspired newer photos.

In the center of the book is an old Jim French photo of Karim and Brian Cerf subsequent to a new photo of Karim and Carlo Massi in almost the same pose. The contrast between the quality of the images is embarrassing. The lighting is bad, the posing is bad (Carlo's leg should NOT be blocking Karim's butt). Jim French's photo is sweet and sexy, in the newer photo the model's expressions are almost lifeless.

The mediocrity of the new images is to be expected. Unlike Jim French who really cared about making artful images, the new Colt Studio is really only in the business of making porn videos. Photography has become only a marketing tool to sell videos. In fact, the studio will not photograph models unless they do a porn video.

It is sad to say goodbye to Jim French and his art. What a disappointment to see the Colt name be so quickly redefined from standing for artistic male imagery to simple porn studio fare.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Rip Colt Didn't Care For Black Men . . .
. . . and this volume makes it obvious. The models are beautiful, but after a while, a nagging, light-skinned sameness sets in. Adam Dexter was not the only African-American model to be photographed by Colt Studios, but there were only a handful. He's the only one who appears in Colt 40. Sexual racism at its most blatant; Colt Studios sums up the current exclusionary Gay aesthetic.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Nobody Does It Better
For forty years the COLT Group has set the standard for male erotic photography. Everyone in this business owes a huge debt of gratitute to Jim French. In 1967 he began doing illustrations and then switched to photography that got the attention of many of us. Even though most of us knew no one personally who looked like Mr. French's perfect men, we believed it was possible that somewhere these men actually lived and breathed, and then there was always some friend who alleged that he had worked out in a California gym where one of these gods also pumped up, assuring us that they were just like the rest of us mortals.

Included in this volume are over 150 photographs of models going back to the beginning of COLT. I recognized Bruno and Stoner-- somewhere I have an entire book of photographs of him from the 1970's. The photography is of course of the high standard we expect from COLT, beautifully lit, impeccably composed and printed on good paper. Many of the models are buck naked in all their erect glory; and if you work your way up the photographs you'll discover that they have strikingly handsome faces as well.

Some of my favorites-- the pages are not numbered, one of my two complaints about this book; the other is that there is only one grey model in the entire collection-- are as follows: the late Al Parker, looking very young and unbuffed; Adam Hammer for the incredible lighting; Billy Herrington (the photo on the right page for the composition); Carlos Morales, for the whole body shot; Jake Tanner for the beautiful side lighting from the window; Mike Dasher (photo on the right side) and Dean Phoenix, two of the rare shots highlighting the models' faces; and finally Tom Chase. No explanation is necessary. Just look at the photo. The shot of Mark Rutter is intriguing in it appears that the photographer either copied Mapplethorpe's notorious "Man in the Polyster Suit" or Mapplethorpe stole his idea from this photo.

Male erotic photography doesn't get better than COLT 40.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Terrific pictorial of COLT's past, present and future!
This book is an amazing look at the past, present and future of the COLT Studio Group. Rich, timeless photographs jump off of each page. I found all of my favorite models in here and some I had not seen before. The book is heavyweight and looks great on my coffee table. Great work COLT!
