Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
This ninth sleuthing adventure in Laurien Berenson's lively and clever mystery series, finds prize-winning poodle owner Melanie Travis on the trail of a missing dachshund while trying to figure out who is stalking her. In an effort to escape tail-chasing males--namely her ex-husband Bob and boyfriend Sam--Melanie Travis opts to track down the elusive owner of an adorable Dachshund puppy that's about to be put on the block at a charity auction. She, her son Davey, and her prizewinning poodles are more than willing to take little Dox in as a boarder. But the more Melanie discovers about the pup's background, the messier the case gets. It seems the wiener dog is part of a divorced couple's emotional tug-of-war. And if tiptoeing through the minefield of a broken marriage isn't nerve-wracking enough, there's also Melanie's new stalker--or stalkers--to deal with. Someone who's gotten into her house at night; someone who's stolen her wallet, and let her dogs loose in the neighborhood. Someone who's dognapped Dox. As suspects keep coming out of the woodwork--and the situation grows more desperate and dangerous--it's beginning to look like Melanie's life may be the subsequent thing up for auction.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Melanie, Sam, and Bob - oh My!
In this ninth book of the series, Melanie Travis is dealing with her current lover's return to the fold after he took off for parts unknown for several months; Her ex-husband Bob is still in town and getting more involved with her family; and she is caught, as usual, in the mix between her Aunt Peg and her dogs hows, and her Aunt Rose who is a well-meaning ex-nun and their various crazinesses.

One of these outrageous ideas comes from Aunt Rose whose husband - Peter - is organizing a charity auction. A well-to-do man contributes a show dog puppy to the auction. not only does this offend Melanie and Peg to the extreme, it turns out that he is doing so to get back at his ex-wife to boot. The puppy is a dachshound (hence the name of the book).

While she is dealing with all of this, Melanie is also being followed by a perky young TV reporter who has noted Melanie's predilection to get involved in murder investigations. So, the reporter, to make her career shine, stalks Melanie. But that is not the only problem. There is another stalker who apparently has more sinister thoughts about Melanie and that is the real mystery that needs solving.

Along the way towards solving this mystery we visit more dog shows, get to meet some more of the twisted personalities that inhabit the show dog world; watch Melanie grow up some more; and find that the puppy is dognapped!

All is resolved in the end with only one gunshot resulting in a wound, and Melanie's relationship with Sam is strengthened. Like all of these books, it is a pleasant escapade without much thinking involved. That's the good stuff.

The bad news from my perspective was the unreal situation when the stalker manages to enter Melanie's house repeatedly to either pull pranks, cause damage, or worse and NEITHER OF THE DOGS EVER BARKED!!! How can a book with dogs living in the house have let this happen? Do you really believe that the dogs would have kept on sleeping when intruders walk throughout the whole house at night, turning on appliances, and stealing the puppy without barking even once? That unbelievable poor plotting makes me drop this book's rating by two whole stars.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Nice reading, but I was hoping for more on dachshunds!!
This was my very first introduction to the Melanie Travis mystery series. I enjoyed it! I picked it up because it was about a dachshund, as I have one of my own. I was a bit disappointed because there were few mentions of dachshunds and tons of mentions of poodles and dog shows. I did learn quite a bit about the life of poodles and dog shows, though! I see that the author owns six poodles (per the book jacket) so it all makes sense. I guess if I want to read more about doxies like this, I need to find an author who owns doxies! :)

Overall, the book was a nice paced mystery and kept my attention at all times. I see that the series are all about dogs, which I think is great! There is just enough romance and relationship plots as well to keep me happy. I plan to read some more of this series.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - You probably have to be in dogs in some way to enjoy
And since I am, I REALLY REALLY do.

I don't do conformation, but lots of other dog sports. And I find it a very enjoyable bubble gum book. Definately a great summer read.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A day brightener
I've enjoyed most of Laurien Berenson's books, and this one was better again. - she really is maturing as a writer. The dialogue is great and she brings just the right amount of "attitude" to Melanie Travis.

The plus is that this is a doggy book. Melanie inhabits a world of dogs and doggy people. If you've ever been part of that life you'll enjoy this book even more.

This was a delightful quick, light read - a day brightener.
