This book takes the characters of P&P on a new adventure. The story fulfills Austen's ending in its own delightful way. Of all the P&P alternative stories out there this one is unique and fun. I couldn't put it down! I love the part of original P&P when Darcy and Elizabeth are stuck at Netherfield together. This book has a similar premise where they are stuck together on a ship, but for much longer time; and without Elizabeth's family around to remind Darcy of her low connections. What happens when Darcy can't escape Elizabeth? What happens when he doesn't want to?

Kara Louise's novel is a refreshing change of scenery from the multitude of Pride and Prejudice variations that populate the bookshelves. Louise manages to explore an alternative scenario, without depriving the story of any of its charm. Be forewarned, the story is different, although it retains some resonances of the original. Elizabeth's prejudice and Darcy's pride remain, but are fleeting, and instead the author offers an interesting "what if" scenario: What if Elizabeth and Darcy overcame their initial aversions to one another earlier in the story? Louise's hypothetical response is the plot of Pemberley's Promise.

This is a captivating retelling of Austen's P&P (read the entire book in one day). Readers who are familiar with the original will enjoy the adapted plot events alongside the new version. The author does a great job imbedding Austen's work with hers without relying on it to tell the entire story. This allows the work to maintain the intended romance and tensions but with new conflicts. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the perchance meeting at the beginning which becomes woven throughout the story.
While other reviewers argue the improbability of some of the events, it must be remembered that it is fiction and that they were just as improbable in the original.

There were too many anachronistic terms that did not enter the language until decades after the events in this story, particularly in regard to the description of the ship's "facilities". Also the basic premise of the story was simply too unbelievable. A gentleman's daughter would never be allowed to travel without a female chaperon for even a few miles, crossing the sea would have been unthinkable. The wholesale insertion of text from JA's novels into a sentence was a jarring note when syntax was ignored as it made the whole feel stilted and artificial.

I thought this was a good story. Yes, some of the plot is unrealistic, but I found myself overlooking it. If you are willing to go with the flow and accept that it could possibly happen, you won't be dissapointed.
I definitely enjoyed this book, and will definitely read it again.
