Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
In the very first book of this mystery series, Judy Bolton is resigned to spending several boring weeks at her grandparents' farm near Dry Brook Hollow. Her summer suddenly becomes interesting when she overhears some men talking about the Roulsville dam. Although, Judy does not understand the conversation, the men fear that she does and threaten her. Judy also becomes reacquainted with her childhood friend, Peter Dobbs, who gives her a cat that she names Blackberry, and meets the wealthy siblings, Arthur and Lois Farringdon-Pett. As the days pass, Judy learns that the Roulsville dam is cracked and may break during the subsequent rain. The moment of truth arrives when a torrential downpour threatens the dam and Judy must rely on her seemingly cowardly brother Horace to warn the people of Roulsville of the danger. All Judy can do is hope that the dam holds long enough for Horace to warn the townspeople in time.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Action, adventure, mystery - a wonderful read!!
I grew up liking Nancy Drew - the mystery, the intrigue, not to mention the fact that it was about a female heroine in a male dominated role. Judy Bolton is the same way, although as another reviewer pointed out, maybe a little bit more believable. It is a book that is hard to put down and is perfect for people of all ages. Hint, hint...stocking stuffer.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - I would read this to my granddchildren
My wife Kathy's review: It was a surprise and joy to me as I read the book to realize I was reliving my youth! As I read I found myself experiencing the same friends and places I'd visited before.
For me it was a wonderfully refreshing trip I kept thinking as I read: "my granddaughter Katherine would love that" and "wouldn't Megan laugh at that." My granddaughters love to read, so I am sending this book to them to enjoy. I gave "The Vanishing Shadow" 4 stars as it has characters kids can readily relate to, a touch of history, suspense, a solid moral issue resolved, and even a kitten for comfort. I would read Margaret Sutton's stories to my grandchildren as bedtime stories.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great to see a revival of this series
Mothers and daughters can now share the delights of Judy Bolton's mystery series. I grew up reading these books in the 70s and are delighted to see the new edition. These books have always had a key advantage over other mystery series such as Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden. Judy actually grows up over the course of the series and even gets married. Readers can mature along with the characters instead of getting bored with people who are "frozen in time." Fans of youth mystery won't find this series too dated for their taste, or the in-depth storylines too superficial.

In this opener, Judy spends what she expects to be a boring summer at her grandparents' farm, but finds herself and friends embroiled in a thrilling mystery.

This is a great beginning to a series that moms can re-enjoy with their daughters, and an introduction to a classic for today's girls.

Fans of youth mystery won't find this too dated

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - An engrossing mystery for readers young and old
Judy Bolton like many young women craves a life of mysteries and adventures and she gets what she bargained for when she inadvertently overhears a cryptic conversation relating to faulty construction of a dam overlooking and threatening total destruction of the entire town of Roulsville. The lives of all the townspeople are balanced on what Judy must do to get to the bottom of the secrets, corruption and bad engineering that promise to wipe out their entire town. Inspired by the 1911 Austin, Pennsylvania dam disaster, Margaret Sutton has woven an intriguing tale that entertains and surprises the reader up to the end.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - JUDY BOLTON HAS BEEN KIDNAPPED!
This review has been one of the most difficult reviews that I have had to write. If someone makes a statement like that, you might think that this is a boring book so it is taking me forever to get through it.

Nope.

The book is hard to read?

Nope.

I don't like this book?

Nope.

The reason I have not been able to do the review on this book for so long is that JUDY BOLTON WAS KIDNAPPED!

When I got this book in the mail, I could not WAIT to read it. I did all of my work for the day and went into my secret place to get my book. I had not said a word about this book, wanting to keep it a secret pleasure that I could read with no one knowing that I had it, so I had hidden it away. When I reached in my box hidden away, I pulled my hand out empty.

WHAT?

I tore the box out and was horrified to find that the book was not there.

I looked all over the house in vain for my book. This was very upsetting as I have loved Judy Bolton books since I was a child and got my very first one at a garage sale.

I looked everywhere for my book for a week.

One day, I was setting up my table for doing some schoolwork with my daughter, and with a sparkle in her eye, my nine year old looked at me and said, " Mom, I have the COOLEST BOOK! This girl gets kidnapped and she has to find out who did it and she is living at her grandparent's house because her parents are gone......"

I was tuning out my daughter because I had business on my mind and was not really up to one of her long winded stories.

Undaunted by my mindless *MMmmmm MMmmms* My daughter continued her breathless narrative...." Then she got dropped off at her parent's house by the kidnappers. Horace and her grandparent's found her and then they took her home and the subsequent day her and Horace went to have a picnic and decided to take a walk before they ate and went to the creek....."

I raced around thinking of things on my checklist that had to be done.

"They saw a dam and then Horace got a box for Judy with a lovely party dress..."

I stopped suddenly like a shot went through the room. Judy? Lovely party dress? Who says "Lovely party dress" anymore?

I looked directly at my daughter for the very first time during her monologue.

"What is Judy's name?"

Energized by my sudden complete attention, my daughter said with a grin, "Judy Bolton, of course."

I laughed out loud.

Judy Bolton's kidnapper was revealed.

I have tried many times to read this book, but every time I sit down to read it, it vanishes and I find my daughter curled up in a corner devouring every page with a relish.

I was going to wait until I could finish the book myself to write this review, but I got thinking- the fact that my 9 year old daughter who is a new reader can not put this book down says volumes more than my adult review ever could.

I have started reading the book a few times before it disappears and I have found it to be exciting, fast moving and interesting. The character development is far more intense than Nancy Drew who tends to be a little more one dimensional. Judy Bolton has much more personal depth to it. We get to see what thought processes Judy goes through and the excitement has more dimension than Nancy Drew books have, although I am a Nancy Drew fan as well.

So, there you have it- not only do I love this book, but my nine year old daughter is determined to finish this book no matter what- I have not seen her this interested in a book yet since she has become a new reader. She has also enjoyed the old Dana Girls books (not the revamped versions of the later years)

Applewood books has made a point to republish books from their ORIGINAL manuscripts of the 1930's not the later edited versions from the 1960s and beyond.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in providing good wholesome reading for their children. Homeschool kids will LOVE this book and you will fell comfortable letting them read it too.
