Product Description:

'Teaching Number in the Classroom
translates years of research into a very understandable and comprehensive approach for teaching children how the number system is structured and how to think like a mathematician.’

Carol Meland
K-3rd grade Principal for the School District of Milton

'This book is an absolute must have for all educators involved in early number. Based on sound theoretical foundations, it offers a wealth of down-to-earth, tried and tested, effective approaches to teaching early number concepts and skills.’

Noreen O’Loughlin
Associate Vice-President/Lecturer in Maths Education
Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, Ireland

Following the sucess of Early Numeracy and Teaching Number, the authors now bring the principles and practice of their acclaimed Mathematics Recovery Programme to whole-class teaching.

Central to the book is the concept of an inquiry-based approach to classroom instruction. Topics covered range from beginning number and early counting strategies to multi-digit addition and subtraction right through to multiplication and division.

Features include:
- assessment tasks
- teaching activities
- real-life examples from classroom work
- guidance on classroom organization and teaching specific topics
- an accompanying CD with printable activities for classroom use.

This book is an invaluable resource for all primary classroom teachers, including experienced Mathematics Recovery teachers. It will be helpful for classroom assistants and learning support personnel, primary mathematics advisors, numeracy consultants and educational psychologists. It will also appeal to teacher educators and researchers with interests in mathematics in the primary years.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Diagnosing Student Strengths and Difficulties with Number Sense
Teaching Number in the Classroom with 4-8 Year Olds contains highly detailed performance tasks that teachers can use to determine young children's strengths and weaknesses in number sense. It is a bit difficult to read this book cover-to-cover because the print size is small, and the language is quite technical. It is, however, worth the time spent reading it, as one would probably be hard pressed to find a source with more high-quality mathematics performance tasks than this book. The research and tasks come from the Math Recovery project, but teachers could make use of these tasks without having had Math Recovery training. I would recommend this book to early childhood teachers who are looking for ways to determine subsequent teaching steps in number sense with their students.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Teaching Number in the Classroom with 4-8 year-olds

Already in it's fifth reprint in it's very first year of publication attests to the popularity of this fascinating, research-based book, which is a 'must' for all concerned with the teaching of primary mathematics. Prof. Bob Wright continues to lead the way in this emerging 'New Times' field of early numeracy education. This book is truly inspirational and should be included in every university and teachers' training courses on primary mathematics education.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Teaching Number in the Classroom with 4-8 year olds
I found this book to be a most useful and practical resource. The quality of research is excellent and the ideas are most useful
