Well, unfortunately if Nancy, Bess and George wanted a peaceful vacation in Oxford, England they aren't getting it. Nancy's father, Carson Drew, is giving a speech at Oxford University and has invited his daughter and her friends along. During dinner their very first night there an arrow is sent to Nancy's plate. It reveals a large mystery which Nancy must solve, involving many a grey rose. Nancy gets to explore the campus and learn a little history. There are many twists and turns and you do keep guessing who has sent the arrow.
This was definately one of my favorite Nancy Drew books. If you are a fan of books set in England, or the gothic atmosphere some authors create you'll probably like this book. It is a Nancy Drew book so it is a quick, pleasent and easy read. Nancy gets a little bit of the culture of England, and Bess learns what a biscut means in UK english. Overall I suggest this book to anyone who is a fan of Nancy Drew or British book. Being a fan of both I throughly had fun with it.

Carolyn Keen's books are very well-done mysteries for younger audiences, but as you get older they get a little dull. Still, Carolyn Keen is very good at composing mysteries; she balances out the mystery well with good pacing, multiple threads that tie in together, and interesting concepts. I guess even as you get older, you can learn a few bits of trivia from the Nancy Drew series. The characterizations, however, are fairly stereotypical. (In other words, don't read this series for character development.)
Aside from somewhat boring new characters, this is one of the better Nancy Drew mysteries. The pacing is well done, the setting is fun, and there's an element of danger when things for Nancy actually get a little rough.

In Search Of The Black Rose

This book is great. Nancy, Bess, and George go to England's Oxford University. There, at a dinner reception in the dining hall, an incident occurs that attracts Nancy's keen senses for investigating. The incident is that an arrow was shot from the gallery and landed right in front of Nancy! A note was stuck to the arrow showing a rather odd mesage. It read,"find the grey rose and there you shall find a horrible crime." Now Nancy is on the mystery to see what crime she can uncover.
I liked this book because it is easy to follow on and understand what is going on and because I believe the plot is brilliant. There are many descriptions and the ending was great. I also liked this book because it is thrilling and exciting and I was always waiting to see what would happen next.
One of my favorite quotes in this book, located on page 16, is: "He couldn't have shot that arrow," Nancy said. "If he had, he would not be back in his seat already." I liked this quote because it seemed to have eliminated one of Nancy's suspects. Another good quote, located on page 128, is: "The name of your horse may have been a coincidence but the accident wasn't." I liked this quote because it showed that the mystery was getting dangerous.
My favorite part of the book was when Nancy found out who the culprit to the crime was. I liked this part because it was so surprising and I would have never guessed who the real culprit was.
