Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
What would have happened if Fitzwilliam Darcy faced a true rival for Elizabeth Bennet's affections? In a return to the world of Jane Austen, the plot of Pride & Prejudice takes a different turn when Elizabeth accepts the proposal of a childhood friend before she meets Darcy again. When their paths finally cross, Darcy must decide what he is willing to do to win the woman he loves. A heartwarming conclusion to this lively tale brings satisfaction to all of Austen's beloved characters. THE PEMBERLEY VARIATIONS by Abigail Reynolds is a series of novels exploring the roads not taken in Pride & Prejudice.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Ms. Reynolds is a master storyteller...
I've read and own all of this author's work and highly recommend them. I've followed Mr. Reynold's career when she wrote and posted on her own site, Austen Interlude. To me, she brought Darcy and Elizabeth to life, much like Margaret Mitchel did Rhett and Scarlett. I love the passionate nature she gives her character...it's both sensual and intense. Abby, if you read this, know that I am hooked on your work and look forward to your subsequent Magnum Opus, Bounds of Decorum.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Not for the TRUE P&P Lover
I have to agree with the original poster. I just finished reading this book a few hours ago and I too thought the graphic sex scenes were TOTALLY unnecessary. In fact, I found them to be gratuitous. The BEAUTY of the orignial is that Elizabeth and Darcy love each other - for their minds and lively spirit. I never thought Darcy of wanting to jump her bones. And I was greatly saddened that at the end (SPOILER ALERT) they HAD TO GET married - that is so UNLIKE the nature of the characters. All their sense GONE. They behaved no better than Wickham and Lydia. Leave their rumps in bed to the imagination of the reader, afterall that is far better than what one author deems as exciting or fullfilling.

I have read MANY other authors book which take on Pride & Prejudice: Darcy's Diaries, Confessions of Fitzwilliam Darcy and most recently Darcy's Passions. THESE books gives you more of the stories, while staying TRUE to the makeup of the characters and expanding our enjoyment without the need to satisify people's need for sex. If you want to read explicit sex, go grab a Diana Palmer book. The author should have warned readers that the characters would be greatly alter in such a fashion.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Classic Literature turned trashy
This was the very first of Abigail Reynolds books I've read. I loved P&P and all of Austen's books as well as most of the variations I've read. The story idea was good...Darcy facing competition was a great idea...the last part of the story was TERRIBLE...it was nothing but descriptions of Darcy and Elizabeth's premarital sexual encounters. The likelihood that the Elizabeth Bennet(or even Mr. Darcy with his sense of right and wrong) I read about behaving in such a way especially after Lydia's disgrace is impossible and unbelievable. I like a good storyline and can overlook a little sex if it's not too descriptive and there's more to the story than sex but this was almost as bad as Linda Berdoll's Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. I hated it and am not sure I want to read any of the other books in the series. This book was classic literature rewritten to make it trashy.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Very good
I would rate this as #4 compared to the other 4 in the series. It was very good, but would rank in this order:
(1) From Lambton to Longbourn (5 stars)
(2) Impulse & Initiative (5 stars)
(3) By Force of Instinct (5 stars)
(4) Without Reserve (4 stars)
(5) The Last Man in the World (4 stars)

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Without Reserve
It almost seemed like the second half of the book was a complete separate story to the very first half. I enjoyed the very first half immensely because you were able to see the jealous and regret that Darcy had when he found he was too late for Elizabeth's hand. After he returned from Italy, the story went a completely different direction and after finishing the book, I was not extremely content with it.

I felt that Elizabeth's reluctancy to marry Darcy was overexaggerated and that whole scenario should have been resolved sooner. Also, the passionate scenes were a little too much for me. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with sex scenes and I read a lot of romance novels with a lot more explicit scenes, however I felt these scenes in "Without Reserve" was so out of character. The start of some chapters begin with Darcy's sexual dreams of Elizabeth and I felt that when they finally got together, the scenes were more like an extension of his sex dreams. I just don't think Elizabeth can be that forward when it's her very first intimate encounter with Darcy. I thought that she was too bold.

I read other variations by Ms.Reynolds and her Elizabeth in this story did not seem to be the same Elizabeth from Pride & Prejudice and also from her other variations. I do agree with other reviewers that both Elizabeth and Darcy seemed out of character.

I enjoy Ms.Reynolds books and this was definately not a bad read, it was just unexpected. I will continue to read her variations and do not regret purchasing this book at all even though it is not my favorite.
