A Look at Black Gay Men

Amos Lassen

Many of us find that our friends in the gay community become our families. We share things that our biological families have no concept of and we use each other to find the comfort we need. "My Man, My Boyz" is a tale of men coming together as family. They share compassion and life and this is the backdrop of the novel which is full of emotion. Tyrell and Chuck are building a relationship but there is something in Chuck's past that could possibly destroy their coming together. Tariff is struggling to deal with his lover's dying wish for him to not be alone and to find love and his new friend, Demetrius, is waiting for Tariff to make a decision. Reese and Mike have been together for a long time. Mike is dealing with his father's rejection of him and Reese is experiencing problems getting his National Football League started. These men come together and they all have issues yet they share a bond of love that no issue can tear apart.
As I read I found myself wanting to be a member of this group of men. They sincerely care about each other and their lives were intertwined. We are not often let into the lives of African-American gay men. Vernon gives us an amazing portrait of gay grey men who live honest lives and he breaks down the stereotypical ideas that circulate about them. His writing style is clear and clean and the plot is action filled with many twists. Although the story is somewhat predictable and at times a bit hard to believe, Dwayne Vernon gives us an enjoyable read.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A Celebration of Good-Looking, Good-Natured, Godd-Hearted BGM Friends and Lovers
Dwayne Vernon's novel "My Man, My Boyz" is over-simplistic, somewhat predictable, at times implausible, but thoroughly enjoyable, feel-good reading. In his zest to celebrate friendship, brotherhood, committed relationships and love (both Agape' and Eros) in the grey male same gender-loving community, Mr. Vernon often becomes an over enthusiastic cheerleader whose words tumble more from the heart than the mind. But you have to love a guy who makes you love every main character in his book, including a heroic ex-con living in a halfway house under the watchful eye of his parole officer.

Good-looking, good-natured, good-hearted, and good-catches each and every one of them, this self-effacing clique of socially-conscious, financially stable, spiritually-grounded, responsible and respectful brothas would make the most isolated outsider feel welcomed.

Tighter than the girls in "Sex and the City" sans the pretensions and sexual obsessions, this golden gang of upscale Houston homies, each, man enough to be boyz and each other's boyz, is a celebration of the best of who we are and the best we hope to achieve, even though the story starts off tragically.

Tariff's long-time partner James is killed during a random act of violence sparked by homophobia. Tariff's best friends Tyrell, Mike and Reese (themselves long-time partners), Jay, and Demetrious naturally rally to his support. Chuck, a gifted and good-hearted ex-con, enters the scene via Jay and new sparks fly.

Reese, a pro athlete, decides to celebrate his signing of a big-figure contract by treating his clique, including Chuck, to a trip to South Beach, Florida. Chuck's street savvy averts a jacking in the making, at the cost of his own safety, only for his secret past to surface and threaten the bond of friendship he has now become a part of.

Mike struggles with the rejection of his homophobic dad while Duante, a jealous and short-tempered breeder, suspecting that his girl is having an affair with Demetrious (unaware that she's simply a beard for her gay running buddy) perpetrates yet another Nellie-on-the-railroad-tracks crisis.

Oh yes, author Vernon keeps the melodrama dripping like good maple syrup, and in spite of some minor editorial gaffes and an unresolved back story involving slashed tires and crank calls, "My Man, My Boyz" is a thoroughly delightful read.

Dwayne Avery is a hopeless romantic, God bless his heart, a heart that he gives only half-heartedly to conflict, tragedy, malfeasance, and negativity.

And yes, get the hankies out because "My Man, My Boyz" has more than it's share of Oprah tears. This is not a book for you cynics out there, unless you're amenable to a little conversion therapy.

Mr. Vernon teases by ending his novel with the very first chapter of his upcoming sequel. I can't wait to see what My Boyz are up to next, and then what they're up to after that. Mr. Vernon has created the beginning of what could be a wonderful series where good guys finish first. Hallelujah!Looker: A Novel

I must admit overall I did enjoy this book. There were just a few things that seemed kind of off to me. There wasn't really any background info given as far as how the fellas met and became good friends. We also don't get much background on each individual character. I didn't know what city the story was taking place in till midway through the book. And lastly, it was just too much of a coincidence how all the characters knew each other.

The story was decent and I did like the bond they had amongst each other. I'd suggest this book to a good friend or family member.

I just now finished this book. I have to say that I am extrememly happy with it. The ending was great and I am waiting patiently for My Man, My Boyz (Our Future) to break headways. I love the characters in the book. Especially Demetrious. He waits patiently for what he already feels in his heart is the love for him. I just can't get over him, Chuck, and Jay. Chuck is this amazing guy that has overcome the stereotype and manages to push through the storm to find his sunshine. Jay, is the kind of man that is pure and straight forward. He is an example of a true friend until the end. Tyrell is another dedicated friend that allows his heart to filled with love. Tarriff is a well polished, professional man with a heart of gold that is filled with undying love. His character is definitely one that I can relate to. Wanting to love yet afraid to love because of. You will laugh, cry, and get angry. By far one the best reads for me in sometime. This read is a must have in your collection to me. I am already promoting it. I am looking forward to what will happen subsequent because that was the ending to the new begining. Great Job Dwayne and looking forward to the "Future"

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - GBM BOOKCLUB REVIEW
In his debut novel My Man, My Boyz, author
Dwayne Vernon tackles a story about losing and finding love and the importance of brotherhood.

This is a story that explores the challenge of finding
love again after it has been tragically ripped away.
Tariff is the grief stricken lover who falls into this
dilemma when the love of his life, James, is murdered
during a car-jacking gone bad. James's last request to
Tariff is to love again.

Demetrius is one of Tariff's and James's many good
friends who tries very hard to help Tariff make peace
with the past so they could work towards a promising
future. Things seem to look up when Mike and his
lover, Reese, invite Tariff, Demetrius, and their other
good friends, Tyrell and Jay, on an all-expense paid
trip to Miami in celebration of Reese signing with the NFL.

When Tyrell brings along his new lover, Chuck, things
get a little bit interesting. When Chuck
puts his life on the line to save Reese and Mike from
a mugging and mesmerizes the guys with a set of pipes
so amazing, Tyrell is convinced he could be a new and
upcoming recording artist, but as Tyrell learns more
about Chuck's past, he discovers a life-shattering
secret that could not only destroy Tyrell, but
threatens the friendship and trust Chuck worked so
hard to build with him and his boyz.

Dwayne Vernon also had a vision to break the
stereotype of the feminine gay male and shows us the
masculine side that a few of us rarely read about.
He also touches on homophobia, the struggles of
keeping secrets and dealing with the dangerous
repercussions it brings once discovered.

We feel you will not only enjoy this refreshing story
My Man, My Boyz brings to the table, but it just
might let you take a closer look at the relationship
you have with your man and your boyz.
