Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
It's 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III's England. Then a beautiful young woman is found savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol found at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man-Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experience in the Napoleonic Wars

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Acrid fog, anyone?
I just finished reading this light and enjoyable book (though the subject matter is anything but light). Pleasant way to spend a few hours. But the author really overdid it with the use of the word "acrid." In the very first seventy pages, it was used six or seven times. Then there was a long section where I didn't notice it, and then near the end it appeared two or three times. After the very first two times, I mentioned to my family. We all got highly amused by me calling out the page numbers every time I found it again. But that's a minor niggle, worth taking off half a star.

This book is written in the typical florid style that's used for Regency romance novels, and of course Devlin seems like he could easily be a hero of a romance novel. I take off a half star for the always-done-to-death "hooker with a heart of gold" girlfriend (though she's called an "actress," we still learn she's being kept by a rich man, who is the latest in a line of them)...

I'll keep reading these, because I like the atmosphere of the Regency era. 4 stars.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great new mystery series - start here, read them all
When Angels Fear introduces us to Sebastian St. Cyr and what an introduction. Yes, for those who have read a Regency romance or two, you'll sense some of the classic characteristics of the "hero" here, but Harris quickly moves beyond that and creates a protagonist that is believable and compelling for any mystery lover. And unlike many romance novelists before, Harris can actually put together a legitimate mystery plot and pull it off. Yes, I acknowledge what at least one other reviewer brings up, there are definitely some contemporary (21st century) attitudes here, especially regarding the treatment of women. It didn't bother me, I'm a 21st century reader! The character development is outstanding, even the "baddies" are superb! Treat yourself to the whole set (so far.) You won't be able to stop once you start.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - So great to have a new author to read
I picked this book off of my recommendations on Amazon. Boy was I surprised. Nice layered characters and a great story. I have already bought the subsequent two books and can wait to get them.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful historical mystery
This book is historically authentic and it is an imaginative and well written mystery. It was a thoroughly entertaining read.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Welcome Debut of a New Author and Hero
Before I get to why you should read this book let me just say that if you enjoy literate historical mysteries of any era you'll want to read this book. It is well-written, perfectly paced, populated by interesting characters and has a murder mystery that is actually a mystery.

C. S. Harris does a fine job of conveying period detail and developing her characters while telling a compelling story. Her hero, Sebastian St. Cyr, will remind readers of Kate Ross's Julian Kestrel with his wit, filmy past and talent for solving murders. This is high praise from me, I love Kate Ross's books. But I'm even more reminded of Dorothy Dunnett's Francis Crawford. Sebastian St. Cyr's disrepute, haunted past, and latent idealism cloaked in cynicism could give Crawford of Lymond a run for his money in the troubled hero sweepstakes.

St. Cyr finds himself accused of one gruesome murder and the main suspect in an attempted murder. Not willing to risk his life to a justice system that is more intent on quieting the matter than solving the crime, he escapes to investigate the murder himself. His investigation takes him into the world of French spies, Jacobins and scandal. The secondary characters are interesting and Harris doesn't overdo the cockney dialect.(Written dialects and accents can really get on my nerves.)

The very first chapter starts a bit slow but the actions picks up considerably in the second chapter. After that the pages fly by. This is a great, fun read. The perfect escape after a hard day of work. Here's hoping that C. S. Harris has many more Sebastian St. Cyr mysteries to bring us.
