Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Driven by the memory of a fallen teammate, TSU’s 1941 starting lineup went down as legend in Montana football history, charging through the season undefeated. Two years later, the 'Supreme Team' is caught up in World War II. Ten of them are scattered around the globe in the war’s various lonely and dangerous theaters. The eleventh man, Ben Reinking, has been plucked from pilot training by a military propaganda machine hungry for heroes. He is to chronicle the adventures of his teammates, man by man, for publication in small-town newspapers across the country like the one his father edits. Ready for action, he chafes at the assignment, not knowing that it will bring him love from an unexpected quarter and test the law of averages, which holds that all but one of his teammates should come through the conflict unscathed.

A deeply American story, The Eleventh Man is Ivan Doig’s most powerful novel to date.

User popularity level: out of 5 stars

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Too many plots, not enough story
Ivan Doig is a much better writer than this book would indicate. Doig tries to combine a love story (or two), a "lost youth" story (or eleven), a war story, a "military intelligence is an oxymoron" story, and a few other transparent plots (a plane downed in inhospitable wilderness--with a rescuer magically a few minutes away, deaths of characters more predictable than in a Miss Marple story) and winds up creating an unsatisfying mishmash that left me feeling cheated. This was the one book I asked my wife for as a Christmas present, and I couldn't wait to get started on it, since I have been a fan of Doig's for many many years. I think he got lazy on this one, and I hope that his subsequent comes back up to the standard he has set for his novels.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - price of kindle edition too high
this review is relating to the price for the kindle edition of this novel. i ordered it with the erroneous assumption that it would be 9.99, as most new novels are. i was surprised and disappointed to find it cost 14.04. had i paid more attention (my bad), i would not have ordered it until the price dropped. one selling point for the kindle is paying less, which is to be expected when you are saving trees, not to mention shipping. i will be more careful in the future, and will not buy a kindle edition for more than 9.99. as for the book content itself, i expect i will like it a lot, since the sample i downloaded to the kindle was enough to hook me. proper review to follow.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - interminal
I listened to this in audio form and found it to be another exhaustingly endless book by Ivan Doig. While his work may be better suited to physically seeing (and skipping over) the words, there are still too many of them; by the time you get to the end of the chapter, its a challenge to remember what the starting point was. The foundational story line and the characters held promise but were lost in the rambling minutia. My sense is that you are either a fan of this author or not with little middle ground.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Positive review of Diog books
When I go to the library, I look for Ivan Diog books because I know that it will be a most enjoyable read!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Typical Doig
As he ALMOST always does, Doig blends history and a darn good, personal yarn into a great human story. Well done.
