Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Emako Blue was supposed to be a star. She was beautiful and good-hearted. She was Monterey’s best friend. She was the only girl Jamal cared about, the one who saw through his player act. She was the one who understood the burden of Eddie’s family. She was the best singer anyone had ever heard, with a voice like vanilla incense, smoky and sweet. She was Savannah’s rival, the one who wouldn’t play by the rules. She was destined for greatness, already plucked from South Central Los Angeles by the record producers. She was only fifteen when she died.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - First Time For Everything
This book was the very first book ever to make me feel like I had actually lost a friend. it made me feel like my best friend was gone and I was never going to see her again. That's how deep this book was. I even teared up a little. I may be a girl, but I'm to....... i don't know the word, but whatever it is, it won't let me cry over no book. But, it was a very emotional read and it saddened me. I like how it told each of her friends side of the story before and after her death, well friends and foe, Savannah. It's a shame that things like this really do happen in this world and Innocence does not make you immune. It's a crazy, cruel, and spiteful world out there and this book tells it like it is. Just a young grey teenager, tryna do her. But God has a plan for everyone and this book lets you see that. After reading this book, I realize that this could happen to anybody, even me and I wanna make sure I do what I can on this earth while I'm here because just like Emako's life was taken in a flick of a trigger, mine could be too. So I thing everyone should read Emako Blue. Brenda Woods put a lot of work into this and the result will have many other young girls who read this book in tears.

Emako Blue is the best book I read all year. When I picked it off the shelf and I looked at it, it didn't look really that interesting. But when I read the back of the book it was ok. When I started reading it, the book sounded good, so I kept on reading and then all of a sudden I was at the end. If you like books on life style and families that are struggling through life, then I you would definitely love this book. Emako Blue is a book all about these two girls that are friends, but the main character is Emako and she had the most beautiful voice and she had her whole life set out to be a star. One day the worst thing happened all because her brother was home. Emako's brother is in a gang and so he's never home unless he is in trouble or if people are looking for him.
This book has a good point of view because it shows and kind of tells you that being in a gang can be deadly. It also makes you think that when people that have a goal that something might interfere in your life and destroy it or cause a problem.
If you want to know what happens to the main character Emako Blue, then I recommend you to read this book.

I was lucky Bound to Stay Bound gave me this book for free. After reading it I now have five copies in the our jr. high school library. One of the best books I have to offer and hardly ever have it available for checkout. It's a MUST for every middle school.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - great message, not so great execution
this book has a great premise: Emako Blue is a teenage girl, uncommonly friendly, with a beautiful voice. she "was supposed to be a star", but is suddenly and senselessly killed in a drive-by shooting meant for her jailbird brother (and no, this is not a spoiler, we learn this in the very first chapter). the book talks about Emako from the points of view of four kids who knew her.

the main problem with this book is that it's too short. you just barely get to know the characters when Emako's dead and the book starts wrapping up. i didn't feel nearly as devestated as i was supposed to when Emako died, because i never got to really know her. there wasn't much plot - most of the book consisted of conversations (which were well-done, but still, you need SOME action). i felt the book was basically just an intro and a conclusion, with no real meat in the middle. it could have been a great book if it was fluffed-up a little. as it is, it's just an outline - amounting to little more than a half-baked idea.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - The Most Popular Book
I teach 7th grade and try to stock the most current quality books I can find. Emako Blue NEVER stays on the shelf. After I read it and shared it with my class, it went straight out the door with someone. As soon as I announce it's been turned in, someone else grabs it, literally within seconds. Boys and girls alike have read this book, and no one has not loved it. It is one of the few books I've seen that appeals to all groups. This book is truthful, current, and especially touching. It addresses friendship, fairness, hopes, and sorrow, all of which are so important to teens. I will always have one in my classroom library.
