Editor's Notes and Comments:
Product Description:
For Piano. Beethoven wrote 32 sonatas for piano. Volume 3, edited by Stewart Gordon, includes Sonatas 16 24 (Op. 31, Nos. 1, 2, 3; Op. 49, Nos. 1, 2; Opp. 53, 54, 57, and 78), written between 1795 and 1809 and published shortly thereafter. Of the nine sonatas in this volume, autographs exist for Opp. 53, 57 and 78. This edition is based on the existing autographs and the very first editions. Dr. Gordon discusses a variety of topics including Beethoven's life; the pianos of his time and their limitations; Beethoven's use of articulation, ornamentation, tempo; and the age-old challenge of attempting to determine the definitive interpretation of Beethoven's music. Valuable performance recommendations, helpful fingering suggestions and ornament realizations are offered in this comprehensive critical body of Beethoven's sonatas. Where performance options are open to interpretation, other editors' conclusions are noted, enabling students and teachers to make informed performance decisions.

Dr. Stewart Gordon, Professor Extraordinaire and Chair of the University of Southern California Piano Department, has put together an amazing series of Beethoven editions for Alfred. Rather than merely including his own ideas about Beethoven performance practice, Dr. Gordon has decided to collect details from ALL available editions of Beethoven--Schnabel, Arrau, Czerny, and many, many more. This is by far the most fascinating and useful Beethoven edition on the market. The layout is perfect and easy to read. Highly recommended.

This is the very first of three volumes of Beethoven Sonatas edited by Steward Gordon. It contains some of the most popular. The print is clear although some of the pages are overly cluttered with footnotes, but the editing is knowledgeable and specific. The Preface has interesting historical notes and performance comments and all-in-all this is an excellant student edition at a reasonable price.
